Where to watch a rocket launch from Vandenberg
Find public viewing spots near Lompoc, check beach and road closures, and choose an inland backup before launch day.
Lompoc is the starting point for watching launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Pick a public spot off base, then check what you can see from there. The pad, hills, and marine clouds can all affect whether you see the first moments of liftoff or the rocket after it climbs.
Choose a public viewing spot
Surf Beach and nearby Ocean Beach Park are coastal options off West Ocean Avenue when access is open. From Ocean Beach Park, expect to see the rocket after it lifts off, when the sky is clear. Check the access road as well as the beach before driving out.
Choose an inland backup before leaving. Beattie Park in Lompoc has views over the valley. Check park hours and look for an open view toward the launch area. Plan for the rocket to be visible after liftoff, depending on the mission and cloud cover.
Check beach and road closures
Launch and landing operations can temporarily close the coast and its approach roads. Surf Beach also has seasonal wildlife restrictions. Check the base’s notices and the county’s road information on launch day, then follow posted signs and directions on site. If your coastal spot closes, switch to your inland backup and use designated public parking.
Check the mission before you leave
Find the launch provider and pad, confirm the time in Pacific Time, and recheck the mission before you set out. A date marked “no earlier than” is the earliest target. If the attempt is scrubbed, wait for the provider’s next window and check access again for that attempt.
