Sky planning, reminders & app

Sky planning computes the Moon and darkness for your date and adds the cloud forecast for tonight; later dates are scored on the Moon and darkness. Telescope targets depend on conditions and the operator.

What to expect

See how ESO’s Very Large Telescope works on a guided visit to Paranal. The route starts in the visitor center and may enter a VLT Unit Telescope or VISTA dome.

  • Observatory or telescope on site
  • Exhibits or museum
  • School or youth programs

The regular daytime tour shows research facilities and instruments. ESO sometimes announces separately booked night visits. Check the current offer before planning to observe.

Research telescopes and working areas require the operator’s explicit visitor arrangements. A campus or visitor-center visit does not establish eyepiece access to research instruments.
